Episode 98: Internalized Ableism

NB: Emily and I say a lot of ableist things in this episode which we are directing only to ourselves. Not to each other, and not to you. We are having a frank discussion on internalized ableism and with it comes very candid thoughts that we sometimes think about ourselves. We would never say, or think these things about you, any of our listeners, or any other disabled person.

We’re back, sorry for the long wait. We were very fortunate this month to gain some new patrons whose generous donations will very likely put us back on a schedule. Thank you all for your generosity and patience. We are grateful for all of you. A transcript for this episode can be found here.

Episode 97: The Accessible Stall and Alex Parker

This is a real treat. Emily and Kyle sit down with Alex Parker, a 4th grade teacher from Illinois that works with a non-profit organization called The Nora Project. The Nora Project is an organization that aims to empower educators to teach disability as diversity.

From Alex:

Here are two links I would love to share. The first is the link to the anti-bias/anti-racist toolkit I helped co-create. The second is some published research of mine that discusses the impact of The Nora Project.

Please check out Alex, his amazing work, and The Nora Project! A transcript is coming soon!

Episode 94: Skepticism While Disabled

Look, we know non-disabled people mean well. And I mean, we love lots of non-disabled people! But you can totally understand why we’re skeptical… right? It’s nothing personal, we swear! You know what, just give this episode a listen, you’ll get it!

Episode 93: Kakana

A transcript for this episode can be found here. Transcript by Chloe Brittain of Opal Transcription Services.

Look, we know fitness is important. We’ve even done an episode on it some time ago. But we also know fitness isn’t very accessible. And even if you can adapt fitness to your ability level and body type, the instructors are almost always people with model-like physiques that don’t have disabilities.

Or at least, that’s what we would say if we weren’t talking about Kakana. Think of Kakana like Peloton, but accessible. Virtual, live, and streamable fitness classes for people with and without people with disabilities. It’s seriously really cool, and if you’re thinking about getting in shape, why not do it now? I mean it’s not like we’re doing anything anyway.

Follow Kakana on all social media @OneKakana!

NB: This is not a sponsored episode, but Emily did receive a complimentary membership to Kakana.
